Happiness

Please respond to the following prompts: I expect you to to ask an open-ended critical level question at the end of your response that may prompt someone else. I also expect you to react to one other's comment within your own reflection. Make sure you are being thoughtful and discerning.

What constitutes "happiness" in life? What do you need to be happy? What should drive and push us regarding happiness? What might blind us from becoming happy?

  1. Happiness is a strange topic. Many people have the things in life that will make others happy but are not happy them self or people have things in their life that would make it seem like they would never be happy but are. It all about the individual person and what they want from life and what they enjoy. There may be some rich guy that has everything in life but he is sad and there may be some poor guy who has nothing but is the happiest person you could ever meet. You don't need anything to be happy but some people are more happy when they do have certain things in life. Some people may want a family, some people may just want friends, some people want to be entertained, and some just want to be with nature. What should drive and push us for happiness is your goals and dreams and what you want to do with your life. You should be doing what you want to do not something that you don't like just because society wants you to. What may blind us from happiness is what other people or society tells us to do. They may tell you to have an awful job just because of the great pay but it might not make you happy if it isn't what you want to do. Happiness is something you have to achieve yourself and nobody else can do it for you. It may take hard work or being lazy but to achieve it you just have to do it.

    1. I agree everyone finds happiness individually, they may experience the same happiness but got there totally different.

    2. I agree with you people should strive to live the life that they want to live instead of conforming to what they are told is good. Happiness comes from the heart not from the pocket filled with paper.

  2. Everyone wants to be happy in the world. We as humans tend to buy or have something that we thing will make us "happy" and we soon find out that it doesn't fulfill(or make us happy) any more and go on to something else and the cycle continues. I feel music can make you happy, but eventually your favorite song isn't by Hannah Montana any more. When I found God, I found out what true happiness was all about. He makes me feel important in life and that I have hope. I don't think happiness is stuff or gadgets. I think happiness is something with in you, that you have to find.

    1. I agree that we look to our possessions to make us happy. But once we find what truly makes us happy it will come from the heart not from the store.

    2. I totally agree with what you said about how we have to buy things to make us happy. You hear people talk about how they just got this new car or something like that. Sure it may seem cool but does it really bring you happiness?

  3. What constitutes "happiness" in life can be interpreted in many different ways, but what it means to me is making others happy and doing what i love. I do what i love so i can enjoy what I do! You make up your own happiness, if you are unhappy because you have Soccer after school and you feel this way everyday, you should probably find a different sport, preferably one you enjoy. I look forward to lifting after school because it is something i love and i look forward to it, when I'm doing what i love i am happy. What do I need to be happy? What i love, friends, family, and weights. I love what i do therefore i am happy. I'm doing what i love. What should drive and push us regarding happiness? If you like sports or your job then do greatness, the only way to become great is to do what you love. So in response to that question our love for what we do is the drive and push we need to become great. What might blind us from becoming happy? Many things could blind us from reaching true happiness, bad friends, bad relationships, doing things for others not yourself and more. Regarding Eric Waughs response i agree, many people have other things that everyone wants but they arent happy, why is this? Becuase more times than not the people who get it have to work so hard to live the life they love thath they dont have time to enjoy the life they want to live. My question to all of you, are you happy? If not why? You control your happiness.

  4. There are many things that make me happy. Whether it's my favorite book, movie or song and my friends and family. When my friends and I hang out all we do is joke around and laugh. My friends make me feel accepted, something I didn't have in middle school. I think when we have been missing something earlier in life, when we receive whatever it was that is what makes us happy. But I believe the main thing that makes people happy is love and acceptance. We should strive to be more accepting to others to make them happy. I know when I reach out to someone who seems lonely, it makes their day a little better and it makes me really happy to know that. We are blinded by popularity. Everyone wants to be cool in whatever way, shape or form but once we get past this barrier we can let loose and make each other laugh and be happy. We might even be able to make ourselves laugh,

    1. I totally agree with what you said because people all try to fit in which takes away from who they really are and there are somewhat "invisible" trying to fit in. Once you find those one friends who love you for who you are then you know that is a true friendship.

  5. I think happiness can be found in everyday life. For me, I find happiness in the things I enjoy, the people I surround myself with, and the places I go. Most of the things I do, I do to make myself happy, and the other things that don't necessarily make me happy now might in the future like school. I work towards living a better, stress-free lifestyle. That's how I believe I can be truly happy. However, the things I do is only part of the puzzle. I love hanging out with my friends and family, because I can be myself around them. I don't have to worry about other people's opinions, it's just who I am. The last piece of the puzzle is essentially nature. I enjoy going up to the mountains and to the beaches in Washington or just anywhere away from society so I can hear myself think and enjoy a view. To be happy, the least I would need are my family and friends. If I'm hanging out with my friends or family, it is always fun because we create our own happiness. Everything else that we have is pretty much the sprinkles and frosting on the cake: not really necessary but always nice to have. I think everything should push us to be happy. If you have a mindset that certain things may suck, then they're going to suck. If you try to make the best out of everything you do, try to make them as fun sa possible, then I believe you'll be happier than most of the people around you. People get too caught up in their everyday activities that sometimes they forget to enjoy themselves. I believe the biggest blinding factor for happiness is money. Many people believe that money buys you happiness, but it truly doesn't. You are the biggest deciding factor for your own happiness, so make the best of it. In Austin's response, I agree with what he said about doing what you love. When we grow up, how are we going to be happy if we're not doing what we love. Instead of working in an office I would rather work with animals or play sports or even be a park ranger or something like that. Life's not all about money. Why do we let other people steer our lives for us, instead of taking charge?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Personally, I think the reason other people steer our own lives is because we are dealing with our own personal set backs, like laziness. That's one example out of a great pool of "human flaws".

  6. In life, the people you are surrounded with, and the opportunities you are dealt constitutes “happiness.” At least, those are what I need to be happy. I take the opportunities I am presented with through band and academics to make myself successful; in the long run, happy. The overall feeling of being content with yourself and the people around you should drive and push you regarding happiness. If you’re unhappy with the position you’re in, that want to be happy could in the long run push you towards greater things. Things such as money and greed might blind us from becoming happy. People will try so hard to obtain money and will keep it all to themselves for things they don’t necessarily need, that not only will it numb them to the good things in life, it could possibly keep others’ from being happy. Instead of being greedy, they could invest in a charity. Why is it so hard for people to let go of money and wealth?

I agree that people feel like they need money to be happy, but i believe money is only temporary. Money comes and go. How can that be happiness? I think it's hard for people to let go of money and wealth because if they did, it would be a struggle in life and they don't want to depend on other people who are willing to help them. Greed and selfishness plays a big role in this too. People want their own money and wealth, that that's all they accept. They're so blind with greed, they push away the love and helping hands right in front of them.

  7. Happiness to me is expressed by love. I feel like love really does make the world go round and it finds people in their happiest mood. Loving someone should always make yourself happy. It makes people do activities at their happiest and makes them smile a little brighter. Sure, a book or video games make us 'happy', but I believe we're the happiest when we love and feel loved. Having the love of a family member even expresses happiness. True happiness is when you wake up knowing your day is going to good. Whatever happens, you take life on with laughter and extra love.

If a complete stranger walked up to you and put out their arms for a hug, would you hug them back?
-Sometimes even a simply hug can change someone's mood and happiness.

  8. Happiness can have many different meanings to others, but theres always that one thing that will make you happy. Some people think that getting whatever they want will make them happy, but that's not completely true. Once you get everything you want you just start expecting to get it and eventually it won't make you happy anymore. I love working out that's what makes me happy, but also having a family who loves me and cares about me that makes me even happier. Being loved by your family and friends is the best feeling ever just knowing that they care about you thats all I need in order to be happy. Why is is that people need to get things in life to be happy?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Every person in the world has their own way of making themselves happy. Some may be happy when receiving money, or spending time with their family. Some people may be happy just by making someone unhappy. Happiness is constituted differently be each person. For me, happiness is achieved when winning, hanging with friends, and exercising. In order for me to be happy, I need to feel loved, not stressed, and confident. Our own happiness and others happiness should drive and push us regarding happiness, if we are happy then we can help make other people happy. Other people’s lives may blind us from achieving our own happiness. If we are more focused on say, a friends life or an enemy’s life then we are less focused on our own life thus blinding us from becoming happy. How come we focus more on other people's lives then our own?

    1. Today's modern world forces us to compare everything to other people, including our happiness. We don't think our happiness is good enough if it doesn't compare to our peers. We want everything to be good enough. "Good enough" tends to be based on what society thinks is good enough. Sometimes, we feel better about our lives if we see that, they are better than other people's lives. We tend to do whatever we can to fit the world's view of happiness.

  10. Happiness is a very hard thing to define. Things that make one person happy will not make someone else happy. For example watching and playing baseball makes me happy but to someone who's a basketball player they will probably think that it's a slow and boring game. There is also common things that make everyone happy like having people around you that care about you and want to help you. Its also easy to get blinded of happiness for example winning could be one thing that blinds us from being happy because some people get way to competitive and lose sight of having fun and being happy playing the sport. Another thing that may blind our happiness is other people because you may care more about how other people feel that you aren'tlooking at how you feel.

  11. Everything in the world is based off of the ideal of being happy whether it be in the future or immediately every decisions we make is based off of happiness. However having life that is based upon happiness can really diminish its true value, like the whole there is no dark without light idea. I believe that anything that you try within your life time that makes you want to do again is what makes you happy just sometimes the levels of joy are either higher or lower, all upon various levels of enjoyment. Without happiness there really is nothing to work for. There is nothing really physically needed for happiness though, it is so very simple to be happy but it really takes thought, a step back from reality i suppose. When i was a kid i didn't require anything to make me happy, my imagination was all i needed. Perhaps happiness came easiest though when everything was so simple, no stresses, purpose, thought, pretty much everything was so fluid and natural it was beautiful. I wish i could still be like that living so freely all the time but now i have a job of looking to the future and instead of getting that instant gratification i am now investing my time into future happiness. Thing is though sometimes people get so caught up in thinking of the future that they never realize that the future is when you want it to be. I believe that everyone should strive for happiness because it is often the fuel that gets us through the tough times that we will have to go through. Too many people look to each other for guidance regarding just about everything, and often times we set up false realities for what we truly feel. Like the example of living in a big house and driving fast cars. Society has set that up for the "desirable" life but is everyone who has that lifestyle truly happy, i highly doubt it, that's why we see celebrities getting mixed up in some bad stuff because the reality that we as a society have set up as the glamorous life isn't all that glamorous. The world would be a much different place had everyone isolated from each other's thoughts. People would think for themselves and be self motivated instead of constantly trying to swim upstream with the rest of the fishes. Is personal happiness still the main motivation for life or has our society fabricated one that so many people strive for?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Happiness is our motivation. We tend to do things that we enjoy or things that will produce happiness. We think we will get a job we enjoy or that brings money that will be spent on enjoyment. I go to school so that I can go to college and get a job (I hope I find happiness in those). I play softball and piano. If there is something that I don't want to do, I keep the goal in mind to motivate myself. Sometimes it can be hard to see the happiness in our stressful lives. When we get consumed by so many things we don't want to do, it can be difficult to see the final goal. Sometimes when my final happiness is far off, it can be hard to see it and I wonder why I am doing the work for it. The further off it is, the harder it is to be motivated by the happiness.

Do you think that everything we do leads us to happiness?

    ReplyDelete

    1. I don't believe that everything we do leads us to happiness because people can make bad decisions that lead to hate or depression. While I feel it is true that most decisions we made often lead us to happiness I don't believe all decisions lead us to happiness.

      Delete
    2. I also don't think that everything we do leads us to happiness because lets be honest, we ass humans make some pretty stupid decisions. Now in the long run, I think that everything we do has a purpose, but it doesn't necessarily lead us to happiness.

      Delete
  13. Happiness is something people strive to achieve. Happiness is something we all love and never want to end. Although it is something we love it also comes with a price. Most things in life which we may have already figured out come with a price. Sure we all might want a big house or the newest sports car but many of us who call these things fun to have may be to expensive for us to have. Most people believe that they need material things to make us happy. I believe that happiness is something anyone can achieve even if you do not have money. When we were all kids what did we do? We used our imagination and created fun for ourselves and this is why I believe anyone is able to achieve happiness. Hard work and dedication should drive us to achieve happiness. If we work hard early in our lives we are then able to spend the majority of our life either traveling the world or doing whatever your heart wants. Sure there are barriers when striving for happiness but we should learn to cope with these barriers and achieve to bigger and better things.

My question is If you aren't happy with you life what can you do to make it better?

    1. I think if you aren't happy with your life then you should take a step back and re-evaluate what you are doing with your life. Sometimes this will cause people to change careers and do something that suits more of their needs.

    2. I don't hate my life... I actually love it! Many people say oh I hate my parents. I am someone who loves their parents and would never say things about them in a negative way. They are the ones who made my life so great!

  14. Happiness is a cloudy topic to talk about. Many people spend most of their life finding that one true thing that makes them happy. In my opinion you should focus more on the little things everyday that make you happy. Another thing that people think of when they hear happiness is money. Money in my opinion is not happiness. As we read earlier in the year about the man that lives in a cave but most of his friends refer to him as the happiest man they have known. When people do something they enjoy it may not matter about the money but about how much enjoyment they get out of doing that task. I believe that having good motives and putting in the hard work drives us to achieve the end goal of happiness. I believe that at a young age until we are out of college we are forced into schools to do the work of our elders and we loose our sense of ingenuity. That ingenuity from a young age causes us to be much happier and do the things that make us better. I believe that schools are becoming larger and larger barriers that keep us from achieving our end goals.

My question: Would you rather do something you hate for all the money or do something you love for no money at all? Why?

    ReplyDelete
  15. I believe that true happiness comes from surrounding yourself with people and things you love, and also doing things for others. If you spend your whole life only doing what you want, you will never be happy. Money and objects can not, and will not make you happy, but what you choose to do with those things can. I'm not saying it will, but there is potential in them. In order to be happy, you need to first decide what makes you happy, and then decide what you can do with those things. I honestly believe that because we have more than what we need, we are blinded by the fact that objects don't bring happiness. People who have nothing are happier than people that have everything. The main thing that blinds us from happiness is yourself. we are too selfish to realize that we have too much, and that we are truly blessed to have what we have.

Question: Would you be happier with less than what you have right now if it was all gone tomorrow? Why or why not?

    ReplyDelete
  16. When you are happy, truly happy you are almost completely unaware. The feeling is a buzz that lasts just up til something breaks the thin wall of a feeling. It shatters and the rest of the world rushes in. To be happy you need to surround yourself with people who accept you. You also need to get away from all the things that bother you. Sometimes I think that part of happiness is the drive to become happy. I also think you need love to be happy. We work our butts off doing things we dislike to become happy and sometime that is necessary but sometime people work too hard. The problem with today’s society is the media can blind us from what true happiness is. Movies and TV tell us a beautiful girlfriend and money is happiness but I don’t think that is true. Responding to Eli’s question “Would you rather do something you hate for all the money or do something you love for no money at all? Why?” I would have to say I would rather do something I love for no money because if you live to make money instead of living for something you love then you aren’t really living at all. My question to everyone is “What is the happiest moment of your life so far? Why is that?”

    ReplyDelete
  17. I believe that being in the state of happiness is all about perspective. Anyone could be happy anytime they want, they just have to be grateful of what they have. In this materialistic society that we live in today, being grateful is not easy. We always want more than what we can have. We always compare ourselves to other people. Seeing what other people have and what we don't makes us ungrateful. The most common thing that blinds everyone from being happy is the media. The media reveals how celebrities and rich people live their lives. The top 2% of our country's economy are living a life that the other 98% of America are most likely never gonna live. This causes depression to a lot of people because they probably recognized that they are never going to attain what the top 2% of America have

    ReplyDelete
  18. Happiness can mean so many different things such as just being with someone that makes you happy or doing that one thing that makes you happy. Money or a career doesn't make you happy but hanging with friends or family, listening to music, and playing your favorite sport could make you happy because your just doing what you want to do not something your expected or forced to do. Something that constites "happiness" in my life is hanging out with my friends and dancing. When I dance I blank out and forget about all the stressful and things I hace problems with. In my opinon happiness can come from anywhere it just all depends on who the person is and what they are intrested in. Money and what others say will make us happy might blind us from happiness because its something that is pressured onto us. Would you rather be poor and happy or rich and miserable?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Happiness to me constitutes directly to love. The reason for this is to me happiness to me is doing what I love with who I love. So that is why I associate love with happiness. Personally I need a couple of things to be happy. One thing I need is soccer because it is one of the things that I love the most in the world. I also need my friends and family. Personally I also would need music because I love music and those are the thing most important things I need to be happy. The people that love us and that we are happy with should push us to become happier because they know what make us happy in the first place. I feel like there are a lot of things that could block us for example stress and work. These things can make us question things and put additional pressure on us that hinder our ability to be happy.
How can you become more happy?

  20. There are many things that constitute "happiness" in life, and it is different for everyone. Happiness for some people may be having enough money to go binge spending every once in a while. Happiness for others may just be a hot cup of tea on a cold stormy day. Not only are there many things that constitutes happiness, but there are a lot of levels of happiness. Many people express happiness in different ways as well. Happiness for me is a few things, for one, it is tennis. Just something about stepping out on the court just puts my mind at ease. I think that this is a big part of happiness is not having stress, which is what tennis does for me. Another thing that brings me happiness is worship. Just being content in the moment is one of the greatest feelings in the world. I truly believe that we shouldn't stop until we have happiness. Why would we? We have such great opportunities in this world why would we settle for second best? There are many things that may blind us from being happy. These things range from distractions such as electronics to false joys. Now don’t get me wrong, electronics can do a lot for us in this day and age, but it really can distract us. For example, when you go to a restaurant, you can look at other tables and see all the children and parents playing on phones. Though this may be "fun", but does it really lead us to achieve happiness? No. Now for false joys, some people try to find their "happiness" in alcohol or drugs. Now sure, this may make us happy for a short amount of time, but it not only drains the wallet, but it just puts us deeper into sadness. Other false joys could be bad relationships and electronics could fit this category as well.

My question is: Can one ever achieve 100% happiness?

  21. I believe we all strive for happiness but we never find it. I think that others may appear to have happiness but we feel as though we can never personally attain it. I think that it is an idealistic idea rather than a goal that someone can obtain. I think as a society we see happiness as perfection. For example if we see someone with a really nice house and we think that they are really happy with it but the person with that house sees all of the flaws and wishes for a different house. We take what we have for granted and don’t step back and look at how fortunate we are. I think that our motivation for nicer things pushes us to this idealistic idea of happiness. We have to accept that we are materialist people and we want happiness that we believe that we can obtain through possessions.

  23. In life everyone strives for one thing, happiness. Happiness is different in everyone's life. Happiness can be exactly you want, but when you possess this item you long for something else. Happiness isn't any emotional, material, or imaginative item. The pursuit of happiness is what makes people happy.

The only thing we need to be happy, is to be able to do what we want. Being happy is being content with how you are and what you surround yourself with. Friends, money, other cool things, whatever you choose as long as it isn't your main focus. Material possession happiness only exist until you get that item, then your focus changes to a different item.

The drive and push behind happiness is the humanity that causes us to keep going getting closer and closer to our goal. That's why people without humanity are incapable of achieving happiness. Without humanity we lose our sense of connecting with people, and people are engineered for relationships. And without being able to connect to people in a relationship will lead to the degrading of said relationship until it is non-existent. There are always obstacles in life, a lot of them are based inside oneself. Others come from the outside, but fixing all problems begins with yourself.

Is the pursuit of happiness what truly makes us happy?

  24. I like to think that happiness can be found in the smallest things in our everyday lives. Nowadays it seems to be a challenge to be happy for even a day, maybe it's just me and my pessimist ways but I find more unhappy people then I do happy people. On a scale from 1-10 on the happiness scale I fall in around a 3-4 I suppose. Somedays I'm not sure why but other days are a different story. But by making people smile and laugh I tend to make myself happier, when I can cheer someone up or make their day in a simple way I truly feel happy and accomplished and I plan on doing that for the rest of my life. For example, right now I just finished arguing with my father about my future, now I might be typing this out of anger but cleaely to him and my mother I'm retarded. In their eyes they could give a damn less what I want to do with my life and the only importantr thing in life are my grades. This might be where my low self esteem comes into play, yes I have a C- in math right now, and in my dad's eyes that means shitty college or join the army. I've been dealing with this since I was very young and it won't end anytime soon so I can see myself being depressed and upset until I'm about 21. Regardless this is why I'm a musician, this is why I do all that I do.m In all honesty I'm terrified of my future. All I know is that I want to be loved, I want to be accepted, I want to change people's lives and I want to play music.

Question: How do you cope with the distractions and the crap people give you?

  26. We can be blinded from happiness by one big thing. I believe that this thing is money. Money can blind us because so many people think that all the rich people are so happy and carefree that they think that money is the key to happiness. Yes a lot of the these people are happy, but there are also some who aren't happy at all. Also, there are many people who live rough lives with not that much money, but are still very happy people who appreciate so much more and do not take as many things for granted. I also agree with Bryce because whenever I play lacrosse or am with the people I love, I am definitely more happy than I am without them.

  27. We all want happiness and we all go through our daily lives every day searching for that happiness and satisfaction that we can get out of life. Happiness is love, having love in yourself is having happiness when there is nothing else to love. we all search for that happiness, but we never realize how easily it can be found just by loving yourself and excepting life for what it is without having any other things to love. Most people these days try to find happiness in materialistic things such as money, but they are never truly happy because it is not what they truly love. What is happiness without love?

  28. I think you yourself constitutes happiness in your life. To me happiness is what you bring to life, not what you take from it. I am a firm believer that you can find happiness or something positive in any situation; but that all depends on your outtake of the situation. People looks for things to make them happy (money, material possessions), and yes those can make you very happy but that is just a short term happiness. So in my opinion the only thing you really NEED to be happy is a positive attitude and positive people surrounding you. The pursuit for the idea or feeling of happiness is what should drive us to happiness but I think that the pursuit for happiness can start to get a little blurry when you start the let your troubles in life take control or when you let the opinions and judgements of negative people bring you down. I also think that people believe the way to happiness is through money or material possessions and instead pursuing that happiness they start to pursue wealth and success completely redefining and tampering with the true mean of happiness which is "a mental or emotional state of well-being characterized by positive or pleasant emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy." 30. I think that true happiness in life consists of ultimate success. Success does not have to have anything to do with money, it should be based off if what life means to you and did you fulfill your purpose in life? In my eyes success means having lived the life that YOU want and a life that no one else can live. Your success should be unique for you. True happiness for me would be to have lived a life full of adventure, excitement and living my dreams, not full of money.

What makes you truly happy and how much does money have to do with that happiness?

  31. happiness is a big thing in life. Many people don't have or haven't found what makes them happy in life. Friends is the big thing in life that we need to make us happy. If your all alone in life, your the kind of person that is always feeling down or the person you see walking around talking to themselves because they have no one to talk to. Another thing you would need is success because success says your happy. it says you have done something good with your life and you are happy with it. No success could blind you from being happy because you haven't found something in life to excel at and you are just always down because you don't know what to do.

what is the true thing that makes a person happy?

    What constitutes "happiness" in life?
Happiness is a fickle thing. It almost never can be fully and completely achieved. I think that we can have momentary happiness, but for the most part I think that most of the time we are actually rather aware that we don't have true happiness. But in its most simplest form, happiness for us is showing that we are content in the presence of a certain person, place and or thing.
What do you need to be happy?
In order to be happy we need to have a reason. There must be something that is pushing us to become in the elevated state of joyfulness. This is most likely a best friend, a favorite place, or a treasured item.
What should drive and push us regarding happiness?
We should be pushed by the desire to be perceived as one who is without grief. In our society we have developed an attitude that steers away from the grieving, and tries to focus on the happiness in life. Whether this is a good or bad thing, is more of an issue of the heart.
What might blind us from becoming happy?
We are blinded by the things that aren't important. We worry so much about reputation, the desire to "need", and our woes. We seem to forget to look to the things that really matter.
